Hotel Au Paradis
2018
Visited in 2018 on our road rip across Belgium, we had this one pinned and had seen previous images of the current state of the former hotel and were curious to see it for ourselves.
Having parked up, we made our way in through the grounds into the complex. The whole site looked abandoned and in a sorry state, just a shadow of its former luxurious glory.
The hotel was built in the early 80s and consisted of a hotel along with a spa and health clinic as well as a vineyard. For the rich guests, there was even a helicopter landing spot for that high class arrival and departure. Apparently, the owner of the hotel complex got into serious financial difficulties in the early 2010s and looked for a buyer for his business but alas - no one came up with the money and so it was left abandoned and has ended up in a serious state of decay.
As I wandered around i could see the trappings of wealth in the design and decor. The very snug almost loft-type bedrooms have their walls elaborately painted with murals and flowers and other things although it must be said, the bedrooms were quite small and the elaborate paintings only added to the claustrophobic feel in the rooms. I guess, the owner thought this design gave the rooms a degree of artistry and high-end feel, definitely not to my taste though! I noticed all around the interior how dark and oppressive it felt due to the style of the place along with the many shades of brown that were all around.
We spent maybe 2 hours in here documenting it and then wandered back through the gardens and to the car. It remains to be seen whether or not anyone buys it and restores it into a functioning hotel once again.
