Holdings Country Pottery, Oswaldtwistle

Holdings Country Pottery was founded around the 1890s on a large clay deposit high up in the Lancashire hills, remote and windswept by icy winds. It used its own clay, which was dug, blended, washed and processed before being made into passes for the potters wheel.

Since it opened until its closure little changed in the process and the factory opened its doors to curious visitors so that they could witness the craftsmen creating ‘Waldian Ware’ in the traditional way.

The family tradition was initially started by James Holding back in 1842 within a mile from the present site which was opened as the 19th century came to a close by James’s sons and grandsons. The Company  stayed within the family as subsequent generations took over management of the factory. It's not easy to ascertain as to when the Pottery closed and was then left to decay, but judging by the style of the personal items left behind along with the level of dereliction I'd hazard a guess at the 1980s maybe the 1990s at a push.
